My daughter met a nice looking lad that didn't speak any English (we live in Spain) and she went from apparently not understanding a word to be virtually fluent during the course of an afternoon as far as I could see. Interestingly, when her PE teacher spoke to her in Spanish, she still didn't understand, curious that.

Seriously though, there is no faster way of learning than having to do it. Mix with as many Spanish speakers as you can find and don't be tempted to revert to English except if things get really impossible or for purposes of clarification. Also getting to grips with the conjucation of the tenses (at least the main ones, don't even try subjunctives, they're impossible) will help a lot. Once you have the principle sorted it's pretty easy.

Michel Thomas language course on CD is excellent. Incredibly easy to follow and really helpful.

    Good luck.

Learning all the verbs in there different ways (present, past, future, etc) If you know all the verbs you would have a lot. Also I'd suggest to watch TV, radio (Spanish Shows), read Spanish newspapers. Keep in mind that even though Spanish is pretty much the same in all Spanish speaker countries there are tons of slang that identify each country. You could also buy a Spanish book that you have read already in English. That's a great way too. By comparison. Also if you decide to read magazines or newspaper circle the words you don't know and check it out in a electronic dictionary. But most important thing is your willingness to learn and accept that the mistakes you made are a great way to learn too! Hope this help. Feel free to contact me if you have Spanish questions.

A great way to learn a new language is through television. If you are at a beginners level, try watching subtitled Spanish programming. Start with movies and specially action movies. The thing is, the action has to be related to the story of the film. This way, your softening your ears to your new language and using the subtitles, your finding meaning to the words.

Once your level has improved, try with shows were the action is not a 100% related to the comments. For example in sports broadcasting, there is always a narrator for the action of the game and then you have the color commentator. The narrator tell the play by play (this is easy) but the color commentator might be speaking about the Conan O'Brien show from last night while Greg Maddux is throwing a change up, so action and words are not connected.

A show for the advanced level would be for example The News. What you got here is some person looking straight at you telling you about something that happened. Of course, once they've read the headline on the prompter they'll use video and and satellite images. But this is also a god way to learn.

My native language is Spanish and this is how I learned English and it worked wonders for me. I'm sure it'll be the same for you.
